Scholarships

Action League of the Foothills gives back to the community by providing scholarships to local students.

Thank you to the students who applied for the Mary Ellen Hillgren and CAP scholarships in 2026.  The deadlines for submissions have passed and the recipients have already received their awards.  Look for 2027 applications and information to be available in the spring.

Mary Ellen Hillgren Scholarships

4 Year School

Every year, Action League of the Foothills awards scholarships to La Cañada High School seniors who will be attending a four-year college or university in the fall.  A committee of ALF members reviews the applications and selects the recipients, based on academic achievement, character, extra-curricular activities and community service.  The recipients are notified then awarded their scholarships during a ceremony on the LCHS campus and their names are engraved on a perpetual plaque that is displayed in the trophy case at the high school.

The Mary Ellen Hillgren Memorial Scholarship, administered by Action League of the Foothills, was established in 1995 in memory of and tribute to a prominent and dedicated member of the La Cañada Flintridge community. Mrs. Hillgren believed in the public education system and she wished to encourage the accomplishments of students whenever possible. Mrs. Hillgren was President of Assistance League of Flintridge and served twice as President of National Assistance League.

CAP Scholarships

2 Year School

Since 2001, the Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals has offered scholarships to further the education of La Cañada Flintridge students and to those attending school in the local communities.

In the coming year, CAP Scholarships will be granted to students who will be attending a two-year college or an accredited occupational program in the fall of 2026. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must attend a school in La Cañada Flintridge and the surrounding area.  Applicants must have graduated from high school by June 2026 and have maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or better. The recipients will be selected on the basis of merit with consideration given to career goals, achievements, community service and/or school involvement, and character.

Applications are available below or in-person at Action League of the Foothills.  They may also be obtained from counselors and/or scholarship staff at La Cañada Flintridge School District, Glendale Unified School District, Pasadena City College, or Glendale Community College.

Applications must be returned to the Action League of the Foothills office at 4607 Oakwood Avenue, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011 along with a one-page personal essay, verification of grades, résumé, and one sealed letter of recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Selected candidates and families are typically invited to attend the September CAP meeting to be introduced to the organization’s membership.
