ALF Instrument Rental
Students in grades 4, 5, or 6 who are participating in the LCUSD/Encore instrumental music program at LCE, PCR, or PCY may choose to rent an instrument from Action League of the Foothills for a fee of $250 for the season from August to May.
- All students renting an instrument through ALF must register and pay the $250 Rental Fee prior to Rental Day.
- All instruments must be picked up on Rental Day by the student’s family or a trusted friend.
- There is a limited supply of instruments available for rent. Payment of the Rental Fee does not guarantee an instrument for your student. If an instrument is not available for your student on Rental Day, ALF will issue a refund for the Rental Fee.
- All students renting a string instrument must be present on Rental Day for sizing.

Wednesday, August 26, 2026 from 3:15 – 5:30 PM
You may arrive any time during these hours
All instruments will be distributed from the back corner of Lanterman Auditorium at the rear of the parking lot. Park your car and walk up. Rental Day will be held rain or shine and we will set-up the check-in stations where appropriate for the weather and temperature. Instruments will be allotted on a first come-first served basis in registration date/time order.
STRING students MUST attend Rental Day with their parents to be measured for their instruments. For all other instruments, the students are not required to attend with their parents but certainly are welcome. String measurements will take place inside the building through the backdoor.
Rental agreements stating the parents’ responsibility for the care of the rented instrument will be attached to each instrument. No signature is required. Acceptance of the terms of the agreement is assumed, once the instrument is taken off premises.
All students must take great care during the school year to protect their instruments from damage or loss. If a rented instrument develops a problem, please let the ALF Music Chairs know as early as possible, in order to discuss repair or replacement. Contact ALF Chairs..

Instrument Return
Students are expected to return their instruments immediately if they are no longer participating in the LCUSD/Encore Instrumental Music program. For all other students, instruments must be returned immediately after the Spring Concert. Alternately, instruments can be returned directly to ALF, 4607 Oakwood Avenue, LCF during store hours. Ring the bell on the OFFICE door and tell the person who answers that you are returning the instrument to ALF Music. Be sure that your student’s name is on or inside the case. NOTE: Families will be notified in the spring of the final return date and will incur a $50 Late Fee if the instrument is not returned by that due date.
Summer rentals will only be offered to students enrolled in an ALF Summer School Band class. Classes are offered for Beginning and Intermediate Band students and the Rental Fee of $75 is paid during the registration process. For more information about ALF Summer School, go here.

Student Resources for Selecting Instruments
Having a balance of instruments is vital to the sound of any orchestra or band. The most popular instruments are the flute, clarinet, trumpet and violin. The less often picked instruments, the viola, cello, oboe, saxophone, French horn and baritone are among the most fun to play. We strongly encourage your student to visit the links below to listen to the different instruments before making a final decision. If your student wishes to learn one of the more popular instruments and for them there is no alternative, we recommend registering early. NOTE: Due to their complexity, beginning students may not rent Oboe or French Horn and there are no Percussion rentals offered at all.
Not sure what instrument to choose? ALF has created a virtual Instrument “Petting Zoo” where students can see music professionals playing instruments on our YouTube Channel. Also, a great website for instrument demonstrations with pictures and descriptions is DSO Kids. Click on “Listen & Watch” then click “Instruments” and select the one you want to hear. You can also take a field trip to a music store and check out the instruments you may be interested in. Be sure to look at the less well-known instruments listed above — you may find an unexpected instrument that excites you!
